More active gift ideas….

Earlier this week, we announced our first-EVer Sweet 16 list!  YAY!  Hope you found our active gift suggestions helpful!  We have a few more gft-giving pearls of wisdom we’d like to share with you too…

instead of rushing out to buy the latest fad toy your little rookie is begging for (but will forget about come Superbowl weekend!) why not consider giving one of the following to create some lasting memories and enjoy some quality active time together?  The kids will love having something to look forward to, and you’ll all enjoy the benefits of being active.  Here are a few of our favorite ideas:

A trip to a local skating rink (roller or ice- indoor or out!)

A day of sledding

Gift Certificates or Season Passes to Ski or Tubing Hills or Ice Rinks

A day of Indoor Swimming at a local Aquatic Center or Hotel

A day of bouncing around at an inflatable playground

Now….go get in the game!

100-ful Snacks!!

These little magic packs really bring the noise!  100 calories of just about every fabulous snack known to man- or at least known to kids!  From super chocolaty brownies to gummy bears to potato chips and crackers, you can find your players’ favorite weaknesses in a reasonably sized, super convenient pouch.  These little wonders may be slightly more expensive than their bulk counterparts- but the built-in portion control makes them worth every penny!  Stock up on these smart little snacks and be prepared to tame your team’s fiercest cravings the sane way.   A word of caution:  if one pack won’t be enough, it may be best to forgo these tasty little devils.  Remember…..they’re still TREATS and thus not really full of good stuff~ just an easy way to keep portions under control.

All-star Muffins!

This yummy recipes comes to us from one of our loyal readers!  YAY~ and thanks, Gwen, for this FAB & EASY PEEZY muffin ditty (that was supposed to be some sort of rhyme, but didn’t quite turn out).  The muffins are GRRRRRREAT though!

INGREDIENTS:

2 eggs, beaten
4 very ripe bananas, mashed
1 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup milk

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease or line 10 muffin cups.

In a medium bowl, combine eggs and bananas. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, sugar and baking soda. Stir banana mixture into flour mixture. Fold in walnuts if desired. Pour batter into prepared muffin cups.

Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of a muffin comes out clean.

Here’s another little sneaky suggestion, if I may:  How about throwing in a handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips for a helathier alternative to cupcakes for birthday treats or soccer snacks?!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm~ yummers!

Run A Virtual Marathon

A marathon is 26.2 miles.  That’s waaaaaay more than most teams can handle in a day.  BUT, why not make it a virtual event?  Draw a map of something that is 26.2 miles.  Then make a little marker to move along the route as you complete family walks.  When you’ve completed the marathon, treat yourselves to a family reward.  Maybe a night out at the movies, or a trip to a local pumpkin patch.  Most marathons give out T-shirts, so have one made or, make your own!  Print ‘Smith  Family virtual marathon finisher’ or come up with your own witty slogan.  Have fun with it and make everyone feel part of the team!

More Exciting News!

Hold on to your hats, FFC readers!  We’ve got some more AB-SOLUTE-LY fabolous news!  I had the opportunity to speak directly with Heather Cabot, web life editor for Yahoo! and founder of www.thewellmom.com yesterday.  Ms. Cabot is an experienced network journalist and internet expert, and guess what?!?  She loves family fitness coach.com just like you!!  She gave me some great little tidbits of advice and we’re thrilled beyond belief to announce that we will be hosting a link right from our site to hers!!  YAY!  In the meantime, be sure to check out www.thewellmom.com and sign up for her most excellent (and FREE!) e-newsletter!  You’ll be glad you did!  Welcome to the Family Fitness Coach Family, Well Mom!  We’re so glad you’re in the game!!!

Irish Dancers!

Meet Irish Dancers Kayla and Maggie!  These girls like to stay active Irish dancing. They recently performed at Irish Fest In Milwaukee with The McMenamin Irish Dance Academy.  Kayla and Maggie have been taking Irish dance lessons since they were 7.  Irish dance is a super way to stay in shape and the girls love it because it’s fun, they get to meet a ton of other kids and form close relationships, it teaches self discipline (because you have to practice a lot) and they get to show off what they’ve learned at performances in front of schools, festivals, parades and more!  Plus, their whole family is involved and travels with them to all their performances and competitions!  Irish dance is a great, active alternative for kids who may not be as interested in more traditional sports.  For more information, check out an Irish dance school in your area.  Or, to visit Kayla and Maggie’s school, visit www.mcmenaminacademy.com .

Break out the good China!

What are you saving it for anyway- Christmas?!  This little trick sounds too good (and too easy!) to be true!  But trust me, it works like a charm!  Instead of piling fruits and veggies on your kids’ regular dinner plate, serve up new varieties in fancy dishes or glasses.  Your team will be much more accepting of fruit for dessert if it’s served up in a way that makes it look extra special.  Serve cut up berries in a footed glass dish or place baby carrots in an individual bowl with a ramekin of hummus or low-fat ranch.  Watching those babies gobble up the good stuff will be well worth the extra effort!    If you’re really nervous about breaking your good dishes, invest in a couple of inexpensive but fancy looking pieces.  It’s a great way to keep your team on the healthy track!

Exciting News!

Hey everyone!  I have some exciting news to share!  Last week I received an email from Kara Lubin, president and founder of a cool organization called the 100 Mile Club.  Her organization encourages kids to set a goal of running (or walking) 100 miles during the course of the school year!  This year, they expect more than 10,000 kids to accept this challenge and experience the thrill of being more active and attaining a personal goal!  WOOHOO!  So, you can imagine my excitement when Ms. Lubin emailed Family Fitness Coach to compliment us on the website and brainstorm for ideas on how we might work together in the future!   Be on the lookout for more info on this exciting partnership in the upcoming months!!  In the meantime, check out the 100 Mile Club for yourself!  It’s AMAZING!!!  Now go get in the game!!

Farm Fresh Fun!

A great way to get kids excited about trying new veggies and healthier foods is to take them on a trip to your local farmers market!  Let them browse around and buy a few things they’ve never tried before.  Don’t impose your preferences or attitudes on them-  just see what they think looks interesting and have fun trying it!  This time of year, farmer’s markets across the country are jam packed with delicious, beautiful and fragrant fruits and vegetables.  It’s the perfect time to check them out and eat fresh, locally grown foods.  Bonus points: you’ll all get a bit of exercise walking around the market as well!  Even more if you can bike to the market!  Have fun & let us know what you find!
